Judging a book by its cover.

Judging a book by its cover.

In an interview you will be probed, you will be emotionally prodded, scrutinised and examined, your ideas, values and ethics will be clinically dissected and the implications of your every answer will be analysed.

You may even be goaded, challenged and provoked into reacting.

You’ll have to deal with all of this if you are to succeed at interview, but you won’t even get the opportunity to do so unless your dress and grooming are up to scratch.

Even though the Roman poet Virgil, 70 BC to 19 BC, told us not to trust too much in appearances - the forerunner of "Don't judge a book by its cover" - most interviewers still expect interviewees to be smartly and appropriately attired.

The human psyche always seems to revert to the idea that first impressions count. Make sure you get the opportunity to be probed, prodded, scrutinised, dissected and challenged by first of all ensuring that the first impression you make does indeed impress.
